NFL Team Passing Efficiency- Week 4

These are some other stats that I have kept for certain teams in the league in the past. There was a period last year where I was posting these for the Jets on a per game basis, but it got a bit time consuming to do.

This is what I call my Passing Efficiency. Much like the overall ratings these rate the QBs in their performance for every traditional statistical category kept for a QB. It helps put things in context about just how much the teams pass the football, how often the complete it, turn it over, etc…Everything is based on the teams specific schedule. If Team A has an Interception % of 20% it means they have thrown 20% more interceptions per game than their opponents have averaged this year against all other teams on the schedule. The second table is adjusted per attempt and is probably a better measure of how an offense is running and if a team should consider passing more or less. Everything is ranked per team because its too difficult for me to keep things by player.

My only intention for now is to evaluate the Jets. If you have any interest in other teams just send me an email or leave me a comment. I will also be posting Pass Defense, Run Offense, and Run Defense stats in the next few days. If you find any errors please let me know as a small data entry error is certainly possible. I usually pick up on those as the season goes on, but it helps me if you pick up an error.

For the most part the Jets passing offense looks to be right around average in most categories on a per game basis. I actually thought they would be throwing more than average, but they are just below average. I have a feeling that this is from the Jets not running a lot of plays because they sure seem to pass a lot when I watch the games. The worst category for the Jets is interceptions where they are throwing picks at a 15% higher than average rate. That is certainly no surprise when watching the team. The Jets best category is in throwing the 20 plus yard pass where they rank 9th in the NFL. Though they did not show it this past week it does kind of debunk the story going around today that they only throw horizontal on the field. I think the bigger problem is that the Jets don't try to go vertical until the end of football games. They have proven they can do it, but for whatever reason they don't seem to call that many plays to try it. The 10% sack ranking was better than I thought. I think that's actually a testament to Sanchez being able to escape pressure and how good the Jets opponents have been at sacking the QB. I have a feeling if I was able to track QB hits the Jets would be far worse. Overall the Jets would probably rank something like 19th or 20th in the NFL on a per game basis.

On a per attempt basis things get a little better. The Jets ability to pass deeper is being shown in a few categories. They rank 8th in YPC and 10th in the 20+ category, ahead of the Saints, Packers, and Lions. The Jets are not hitting the super big plays but only the Packers jump in that category, which likely means the Packers are either hitting huge bombs or much shorter passes. Surprisingly the Patriots are one of the worst teams in the NFL at the 40+ yard play but rank second in the 20+ yard category. Definitely a unique offense. Back to the Jets….

Needless to say the Jets are bad at turning the ball over, 11th worst in the NFL, and it is a killer that they have to fix. Seeing how well they perform in the other categories you have to wonder just what is going wrong in the games besides the interceptions. Clearly the short passes are not working. If they were the YPC would be lower and the completion percentage higher. I don't know if that means the Jets should scrap so many of the shorter routes or if Sanchez just cant throw them and/or avoids them, but something needs to be done. They can be more productive than they currently are.
