NFL Team Offensive Efficiency- Week 6
The Jets passing game looks to have settled firmly into the middle of the pack in terms of statistical production, especially when adjusted for attempts. The Jets have significantly cut down on the interception rate to the point where they actually turn it over less than expected, but they look to have completely sacrificed the big play from the offense to do so. The only teams with less 40 yard plays are the 49’ers and Cleveland Browns. The Jets still rank above average in the 20+ category, but that is falling as the season progresses. I don’t know if Sanchez has handcuffed himself or if he is being handcuffed, but because of the tight reins the Jets offense is no longer explosive, something they relied on last season in the passing game.
The Jets running game is a disaster. They rank 28th in the NFL in YPA, yet they rank 9th in overall running attempts. I understand Sanchez’ deficiencies on the field, but the Jets overrely on a phase of the game that does not work anymore. They are in the bottom third of the NFL in big plays, averaging 44% below their schedules norm in the 20 plus run category. Surprisingly they rank 12th in TDs per attempt. I don’t know if that says something about the Jets ability to run short draw plays behind C Nick Mangold or says something about their runners just being unable to do minimal damage beyond the line of scrimmage on plays where there is a big field in front of them. Either way it is not working and the Jets need to either change running backs or slowly scrap the system.
