NFL Team Defensive Efficiency- Week 6
Defensively the have firmly set themselves up as a top 5 pass defense, but with all the money invested in the cornerback position you have to wonder if that is good enough. The Jets are an excellent goal line coverage team, the best in the NFL and limiting passes that find their way into end zone. The pass rush ranks second in the NFL with 57% sacks more than average. The problem area is the big play. The Jets rank 27th in that category giving up 59% more than average 40 yard plays. That's a clear indication of the problems with the safeties who are responsible for either deep coverage or making the stop after an intermediate completion and they are not doing it.
The run defense has been hampered by the fact that the Jets pass defense has played so well. Unlike in years past teams are running at the Jets- they rank 28th in the NFL in terms of overall attempts with teams running over 30% more than normal when they play NY. In terms of YPA they are actually holding teams slightly below the average so it is not as bad as it may appear. It's not great, but it is surely not bad. The concerning thing is the extremely high TD percentage. The only team worse in the NFL on an attempt adjusted basis is the Colts. The short yardage areas are a problem and it really speaks volumes about how ineffective Bart Scott and David Harris have been this year as well as the D-Line not being able to contain the edges. The Jets are still an above average team at eliminating the big play, but they have to improve on the short field for the defense to get close to where it was a few years ago.
